A travel agent was arrested on Tuesday in Jalandhar after 34 fake passports and three forged US visas were recovered from his possession, a senior police official said.
Harbhajan Singh was arrested from Maqsudan area of the district, where he was staying in another name, after one Pritam Singh filed a complaint that he had paid Rs 8.15 lakh to Harbhajan Singh for sending his son abroad but neither he arranged the travel nor money was returned.
The travel agent's wife Joginder Kaur was also arrested. The arrests came after a police team from Kapurthala raided Harbhajan's residence here, from where 34 fake passports, three fake US visas and other forged documents used for making forged documents, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Bhulath) Balbir Singh said.
Police were also investigating whether Harbhajan has any links with travel agents who have alleged connections with the human trafficking case involving BJP MP Babubhai Katara, he said.
He was dismissed from state-run cooperative PINSUP on corruption charges ten years ago and was living in the area using another identity, he said.
A case has been registered under relevant sections of Immigration Act. Meanwhile, police sources said Harbhajan has recently purchased a house in Maqsudan area after paying Rs 32 lakh and the non-payment of commission to the property agent led to revealing the identity of Harbhajan.
