Unrest returned after 24 hours of normalcy in Srinagar on Thursday as agitators came out on the streets and raised pro-freedom and anti-India slogans and assaulted commuters for "disobeying" the separatists' protest call. The police dispersed them.
There were disturbances in Pulwama and Anantnag (both south of Srinagar) too.
The Syed Ali Shah Geelani wing of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) gave the protest call on account of the alleged high-handedness of the security forces.
The moderate wing of the APHC, led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, matched it, though in a different manner.
"We have given calls for protests and sit-ins in the morning and evening," the Mirwaiz said.
The Mirwaiz asked people to continue with peaceful protests and urged the rich to donate money for this purpose.
SP Showkat Shah said: "Protests were held at many places but remained peaceful."
