Agitators storm Mayor?s office

india Updated: Jul 20, 2006 16:14 IST

RESIDENTS OF seven municipal wards stormed and lay siege to Mayor Dr Uma Shashi Sharma’s office this morning to protest alleged irregularities in allotment of below poverty line (BPL) ration cards.

The rain-drenched protestors first gathered at the entrance to the IMC headquarters and raised slogans against Mayor Dr Uma Shashi Sharma. When this elicited no response from the Corporation top brass the agitators, led by Rajesh Chaurasia, decided to storm the mayoral office.

As the protestors marched towards Dr Sharma’s office they were blocked by policemen, resulting in noisy scenes and minor scuffles.  The demonstrators, however, finally managed to gain entry to the wood-panelled office on the first floor where they again raised slogans and posed for the posse of lensmen, who had arrived at the site.

The protestors accused the BJP-dominated council of allotting BPL cards to its sympathisers while overlooking the claims of eligible candidates. “Each corporator has managed to get 10-15 cards for his supporters,” asserted a resident of ward No 1, who demanded a governmental inquiry into the rigging of BPL survey records.

Earlier, the protestors hailing from ward nos 1, 2, 3, 21, 24, 25 and 26 belonging to bloc no 1 assembled at Krishnapura Chhatri from where the procession marched in the form of a rally to the IMC headquarters. The procession was led by Vinod Singh Panwar, Mukesh Yadav and Anoop Shukla among others.
