Air Chief Marshal SP Tyagi, chairman, Chiefs of Staff Committee and Chief of the Air Staff, on Thursday launched a book on weapons authored by Dr NC Asthana and Dr Anjali Nirmal. Titled 'The Ultimate Book of Weapons', it's an encyclopaedia of weapons of all kinds ranging from swords to rifles, ranks to fighter aircraft and nuclear submarines to ballistic missiles and hydrogen bombs.
Asthana, a nuclear physicist by training, is an IPS officer and the book is his tenth work co-authored by his wife Anjali, who holds a doctorate in police administration.
At the launch, Tyagi said, "As a practitioner of warfare, I have found the book to be extremely useful." The book deals not only with weapons, their design and technology but also the men who made them, the men who used them and the impact they made on the course of history.
Referring to the significance of weapons, Asthana said, "The fate of nations is still decided by their wars -- indirectly by their weaponry. Given men of similar competencies on both sides, the quality of weapons wielded by them will decide their fates," Asthana said while making a PowerPoint presentation on how the book had been structured.
The presentation was quite absorbing with interesting bits of fact thrown in -- Buffalo Bill Cody's favourite gun, Phantom's pistol and of course, James Bond's Walther.
