In response to the defence headquarters' claim that it had informed city deputy commissioner PC Meena about unauthorised construction mushrooming near the Indian Air Force ammunition depot, the official has denied any such communication.

Meena, who heads a committee to check, stop and dismantle fresh construction in the restricted zone spread across a radius of 900 metres, said, “It is unfortunate that Gurgaon Air Force officials have always been least interested. They have never shown active efforts in solving this issue, they have never informed us about any such activities at all.”

He added, “The district administration does not give permission for constructing houses nor does it issue no-objection certificates. I am doing my duty honestly and will submit the report to the court on time about the action taken in the last six months,” he added.

The Punjab and Haryana high court had asked the Gurgaon administration to look into the matter and dismantle the illegal buildings immediately. The DC also refuted the defence department's view that the encroachments came up because of the district administration's fault. “Why did defence officials not attend our meetings to share their views? If they say they have been writing letters to the administration, this may be just an excuse to shirk away responsibilities,” Meena said. The DC, however, did not reveal how many buildings have been demolished nor did he give an exact figure regarding the number of 'illegal' buildings identified by the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon in its recent survey.

“We have been taking action regularly and no fresh construction has been reported. The department has submitted its report to the court,” said Dilbag Singh, district town and country planner (enforcement).

The Punjab and Haryana court had issued directions to the district administration in connection with a contempt petition filed by a Gurgaon resident in April last year. In its order, the court mentioned that the ammunition depot is a sensitive site and any non-agricultural activity in the 900-metre radius amounts to offence.
