Air India makes it to PM address

india Updated: Aug 16, 2009 02:16 IST

In his Independence Day speech, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said the problems of ailing national carrier Air India would be resolved soon.

It is possibly the first time a prime minister has spoken about an ailing public-sector unit in his address on August 15.

“We’re giving careful attention to the problems of Air India and will resolve them soon,” he said.

Air India has losses of about Rs 7,200 crore, and debts of about Rs 16,000 crore due to reasons such as low passenger loads, the economic slowdown and high prices of aviation turbine fuel.
