Airfares could go down once again, with Air India expected to reduce fares by 12 to 15 per cent to increase passenger loads. Passenger loads have come down drastically in recent times due an unprecedented hike in air ticket prices.
“A fare cut is likely soon, but by when, it cannot be said,” an Air India executive, who did not wish to be identified, said. “It is primarily because we are registering low passenger loads for some time now. It is better to offer low fares rather than fly empty.” The airline’s load factors have come below 50 per cent on the domestic sector and to is about 26 per cent on the international sector.
The number of flights during each week fell to 9,635 in October from 10,922 in March, according to latest figures.
