india Updated: Dec 11, 2009 14:11 IST

Air India will operate flights six days a week from the Umroi airport on the outskirts of Shillong beginning December 12, official sources said on Friday.

Alliance Air, the wholly owned subsidiary of Air India, will operate 6 flights a week except Friday and will use ATR Aircraft on this route which can carry up to 45 passengers, the sources said.

The state cabinet met last evening to work out the modalities for operating the flights. Chairman and Managing Director of Air India Arvind Jhadav had met Meghalaya Chief Minister DD Lapang in New Delhi recently where the proposal was worked out.

Other matters like setting up of the Air India Call Centre and Air India International Academy for Aviation Services, routes connecting Tura in West Garo Hills district are being followed up with the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the sources said.

The airport at Umroi was opened in 2002 for operating the 50-seater ATR aircraft from Shillong to Kolkata.

At present, Air India operates three flights in a week.
