Domestic passenger airliner Air Sahara on Wednesday flagged off its direct flight linking New Delhi and the state capital, making it the only carrier with a direct non-stop flight between the two cities.

Senior airline officials took the opportunity to ask the Kerala government to reduce sales tax on aviation fuel in the state.

Talking to reporters, Air Sahara President Alok Sharma said sales tax on aviation fuel in Kerala was the highest in the country and a reduction would enable the aviation industry to operate more flights focusing on tourism development, he said.

Air Sahara had plans to start services to Maldives and Sri Lanka from Thiruvananthapuram, he said.
