Aircraft noise is plane irritating

Aircraft noise is plane irritating

india Updated: Aug 03, 2006 02:29 IST

Planes at IGI airport have done more than just fly people in and out of the Capital.

They have robbed people living in the vicinity of their sleep, triggered concentration problems and irritation, a study of the airport's noise-pollution level has found.

Residents in upscale Vasant Vihar, Sarvapriya Vihar and even the JNU area have been affected, the report states.

The School of Environmental Sciences, led by Dean V.K. Jain, K. Kumar and research student Sanyogita, had done the survey. They conducted experiments during night when the frequency of aircraft is high.

"Average noise is between zero and 140 decibels, where zero denotes threshold of hearing and 140 dB denotes threshold of pain," said Sanyogita. "We measured background noise and enhanced peak-level noice induced by overhead aircraft."

At Vasant Vihar, the enhanced noise at night was at a peak value of 32.4 dB, Sarvapriya Vihar registered 31.9 dB and JNU 39 dB. Consequently, Vasant Vihar residents had to cope with maximum noise pollution as the noise meter registered 48.5 dB, Sarvapriya Vihar had 43.3 dB while  Jawarharlal Nehru University had 47.2 dB noise.

Although the university has not made any suggestions to tackle this problem, the survey conducted by them shows that psychological and physiological problems are on rise.

The Jawarharlal Nehru University too had conducted an internal survey among 200 students in several hostels where aircraft-induced noise pollution was the highest. The study was conducted on five scales within JNU, on disorders like annoyance or irritation, sleep disorder, concentration and speech interference.
