Highlight Story

Suck pulpy Aish, sweet Sonia, yummy Akhilesh and now enjoy a quickly fructifying mango variety which Uttar Pradesh’s ‘Dr Mango’ P Kaleemullah Khan has named after the 23-year-old gang rape victim ‘Nirbhaya’.

The new variety has been harvested in UP’s famous mango bowl Malihabad. Padam Shri Kaleemullah Khan says Nirbhaya mango is his little innovation to honour the bravery and spirit of the young physiotherapist, whose rape and death galvanised the entire nation against the rising number of sexual attacks.

Dr Mango says he had planted the tree three years ago and was surprised that it bore fruits in such a short span. This year, the mangoes were 'slightly smaller' but the next harvest would hopefully be normal, he says.

Khan, 57, is a world renowned mango grower. His name has been registered in the Limca Book of World Records for successfully developing 300 varieties of mangoes on a single tree.

In 1999, he grew 54 varieties on a single tree and gifted the tree to the then President, Shankar Dayal Sharma. The tree still finds place in the Mughal Gardens at the sprawling Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.
