The last 20 years in Jammu and Kashmir were the years of the gun. People here abhorred, feared, loved and worshipped guns, especially the AK-47 and 56s brandished by the militants.
Now, they want them for themselves and are ready to pay even Rs 1.5 lakh for one. But it’s not guns that they are after. They want these high-falutin numbers for their car registration plates.
At present, Jammu registration plates are passing through the ‘JK02AJ’ series and very soon the ‘JK02AK’ series will begin.
The Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Jammu has received a large number of applications, asking for numbers that include these magic figures. The numbers will be auctioned on April 7.
According to an RTO official, who refused to be named, a local businessman even offered Rs 1.5 lakh to have AK-47 on his car number plate.
Regional Transport Officer R.C. Sharma told Hindustan Times, “It’s for the first time that a series of registration numbers are being auctioned. For, people have gone crazy about those numbers.”
He said, “People always pay extra for special numbers, but bagging a AK-47 number is a life-time opportunity. Although the demand for AK-56 is also there, AK-47 clearly takes the cake, at least for now.”
