‘3 Idiots’ has cast a spell on Akhil Kumar. But that could just turn out to be a blessing in disguise for the bantamweight boxer, who had a rather disappointing 2009.
A particular scene in the successful Aamir Khan starrer, where Boman Irani proclaims ‘everyone remembers the one who comes first and nobody cares for the second position’ has influenced Akhil so much that he is now gunning for nothing less than a gold medal.
“In ‘3 Idiots’, it says that only the best is recognised, and similarly, in boxing, only the guy who wins the gold medal is remembered,” he said.
Down with injuries for most part of last year, Akhil couldn’t reproduce his showings of 2008, which included a stunning win over world champion, Sergey Vodopyanov, in the Beijing Olympics.
“It (2009) wasn’t a great year for me, and I have also been hampered by injuries almost throughout the year.
But that is not going to pull me down this year,” he stated emphatically. “There are a lot of tournaments coming up and those will give us the opportunity to carry forward the momentum,” he said when talks veered to Indian boxing.
“Going by form, I think Suranjoy (Singh) and Nanao (Singh) are at their best and should do very well this year,” the boxer said.
