Teachers of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) will go on strike on Friday to protest the abduction of a leading cardiologist who is married to a teacher.

Rizwan Khan, secretary of the AMU Teachers Association, said on Thursday that the teachers would go on a token strike to protest the kidnapping of Mannan Vasanwala.

"Members of the association will also stage a protest march and submit a memorandum to the district magistrate," Khan said.

The abduction of Vasanwala by unidentified persons on June 20 shocked the residents of this town. He was allegedly kidnapped shortly after closing his clinic at the busy market near Medical College Road.

Vasanwala's wife Shaista is a senior teacher at the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College under AMU.
