The mood was festive at Hatoondi, Khalil Chisty's brother's home near Ajmer, on Monday. As soon as word about bail for the 80-year-old Pakistani virologist got around, family members began distributing sweets.

"Allah has listened to my prayers. My brother-in-law will be out of jail soon," said Kamrunnisa Begum, wife of Chisty's younger brother, Jamil.

Chisty, accused of killing a man named Idris during a brawl in Ajmer, was undergoing life imprisonment at a jail in Ajmer.

But jail authorities claimed they had not received the bail orders yet. "He will be released as soon as his release orders reach us," said jail superintendent KS Mathur.
