A day after the peon of a state-run juvenile home was arrested for sexually assaulting three minor inmates, the local administration recommended the suspension of nine staffers of the home.
District probation officer Ila Pant, who made the announcement on Saturday, said inquiries had revealed that Vidyabhushan Ojha, 50, had been exploiting inmates for quite a while.
The accused had been with the home since 2005.
On Friday, the administration had suspended Urmila Gupta, the superintendent of the juvenile home for “negligence”, and Ojha’s service was terminated after he confessed to the crime.
“In order to prevent a shortage of staff following the action, government employees posted in other departments having a reputation for sincerity and sensitivity are being transferred to the juvenile home,” said Pant.
Meanwhile, a group of lawyers staged a demonstration outside the office of the SP (City) demanding intervention of Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav and “stern action” against the culprit.
The incident came to light when a former inmate of the home, a 10-year-old girl, who was recently adopted by a couple, spoke up about the horrific goings on in the home. The couple then alerted superintendent Gupta.
On Friday, a “shocked” Allahabad high court took note of the matter and directed that “an exemplary deterrent message goes out”.
