Allotment of unique identification number to citizens is likely to start next year and the work for the first phase would start this August, UIAI chairman Nandan Nilekani said today.
Nilekani, the chairman of Unique Identification Authority of India (UIAI), after meeting Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik told reporters that the state had already started using finger print impressions in making ration cards in Rayagada district.
Identification of the citizens would begin under Multipurpose National Identity Card (MNIC) project.
In the first phase, about 10 crore citizens will be provided unique numbers. About 60 crore people would be allotted the number in next five years.
