Chief minister Parkash Singh Badal has requested the union government to make a national policy to allow non-residents to buy land in any state.

Punjab had this policy but in states such as Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir, people from other states couldn't buy land, Badal said during a press conference here on Saturday. In reply to a question, Badal said the Punjab government was doing its best to help Punjabi farmers evicted from Kutch district of Gujarat and had offered to represent them in the Supreme Court.

Besides, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), ruling party in Punjab, would use its influence on Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi, who belonged to alliance partner Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), to get the case withdrawn from the court. He said the Punjabi farmers had turned the barren Kutch land into cultivable more than five decades ago and settled there permanently.
