Ambedkar followers stage road block, traffic hit

india Updated: Dec 01, 2006 18:08 IST

HUNDREDS OF Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar’s followers created a road blockade at Board Office Square here on Thursday morning in retaliation to the defacing of Dr Ambedkar’s statue by some mischievous elements in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh.

Protestors blocked traffic from all four sides at about 11.30 a.m. and raised slogans against those who carried out the act. Long queues of vehicles were formed for almost two hours at the spot and traffic was badly disrupted.

Heavy police force was deployed at the spot and police had a tough time controlling the protestors. Meanwhile, several supporters took out a rally at the Roshanpura Square too. Demonstrators burnt an effigy of the Uttar Pradesh State Government. Some members of Boudh sect also tried to get shops closed at the Panchsheel Nagar area.

Addressing the rally at the Roshanpura Square, leader of the protestors Sanjay Dhapade said the act hurt sentiments of the Boudh community. He threatened more agitations until the time the UP State Government did not identify and punish the culprits who had vandalised the constitution maker’s statue.
