A statue of Ambedkar was desecrated by some unknown persons in a tribal village in Rajnandgaon district, leading to tension in the area, police said on Monday.

"Some unknown persons had put a garland of shoes on the statue of Ambedkar in Gopalpur village of Mohla Police station, about 165 km from the state capital, yesterday," Rajnandgaon District Superintendent of Police V K Choubey told PTI.

A case has been registered against unknown persons and heavy police deployment have been made to maintain law and order in that village of about 1000 population, of which most of them are tribals, he said.

Last week, too, the statue was desecrated following a fight between two groups, police said.

Primary investigation revealed it was done to push some of the villagers in a difficult situation, police added.
