Highlight Story

She has been playing truant... till she relents, “Come over to Shabana aunty’s house, right across Prithvi Theatre.” Once there, I can see that she would rather spend time with a book than with a pen-pusher.

All right, so where has she been? She shakes her head, “Every time I’m away, the media asks me this… I was shooting for The Namesake and then Cheeni Kam I’ve been around.”

She elaborates, “My sister Farha and I didn’t join the industry with grand dreams. We weren’t ambitious. I did films which came my way, whatever appreciation and awards I’ve got have been a bonus. But my family and friends think I’m not aggressive enough.

Actress Tabu will next be seen in the film Chini Kam.

“Maybe when I started out, if I’d planned my career, things would have been different. My work has been the sum-total of my experiences with directors I’ve worked with and the roles I played. I’ve enjoyed the ride so far.” According to the actress, the current film scenario is very encouraging. “But for me, it’s not enough that a film is different. Besides my role, the producer should be sound. The last thing I want is discomfort on the sets. It can’t be all smooth-sailing, but I’d like to work in peace. There should be something about the film which makes me happy to be a part of it.”

Veering towards

The Namesake,

she says, “The film came to me at the right time. That’s what I probably needed to do as an actress. The role of a Bengali woman settled in the US is far removed from what I am.

“Even the experience of shooting the film was new. It was a foreign crew which was completely professional and focused. I could go there without any excess baggage. I could be myself. I loved being me, doing my work and coming back home.”

On director Mira Nair, Tabu’s take is, “She’s incredible. It’s commendable that she has achieved so much in her life in different countries (US, South Africa). It takes courage to carry on with conviction. She has done it again and again with her films.”

On Cheeni Kam, she exults, “Working with Amitji was fantastic. The treatment given to our relationship is very natural, not OTT. I think Amitji and I make a terrific pair.”

Take 5 - Reflections of an actress

1 The Namesake: “When I returned after the shoot, I wasn’t stressed about where the film would take me. I was only enjoying the process.”
2 Her wish-list: “Oh, I would love to act in The Kite Runner. I heard someone is planning to make a film on the book.”
3 Coming up next: Debutante director Nupur Asthana’s film featuring Madhavan, produced by UTV.
4 Right now: She’s about to take off to New York to shoot a photo-feature for the magazine Premiere.
5 Crazy lines: “I had to write a letter in The Namesake. I would tilt the paper, Mira would say, ‘Keep it straight’, the cameraman would say, ‘But the paper is straight’."
