District Youth Akali Dal (YAD) chief Gurpartap Singh Tikka on Thursday announced to contest as an Independent from the Amritsar (south) constituency, from where the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has re-nominated sitting MLA Inderbir Singh Bolaria. Tikka is upset with the SAD for handing over the Amritsar (east) seat to the BJP. He had been aspiring for the party ticket from this assembly segment.

Senior deputy mayor Ajay Bir Pal Singh Randhawa and a couple of councillors have announced support for Tikka.

Surrounded by hundreds of his supporters at his residence, Tikka said, “Despite working actively for the SAD since 1994, I have been ignored regularly for the ticket.”
