Aligarh Muslim University's vice chancellor Lt Gen (retd) Zameer Uddin Shah received serious injuries when his bicycle was hit by a car in what is being seen as a deliberate act.

AMU spokesman Rahat Abrar said the vice chancellor, who uses a bicycle to commute, was on his way to the office when some people in a red car started following Shah and then deliberately hit his bicycle. The incident happened quite close to the Bab-e-Syed (university gate).

The vice chancellor was rushed to the emergency room of JN Medical College Hospital. Shah fractured two of his ribs and his leg was badly bruised in the accident.

Shah is the brother of film actor Naseeruddin Shah. DIG (Police), Aligarh Range, Prakash D said, "This is not a simple case of road accident. The car driver deliberately hit the vice chancellor's bicycle." He said the suspects have been arrested and the vehicle has been seized. Further investigations are on in the matter.

Shah's gunner, Irfanuddin, was only a few steps behind the vice chancellor on a bicycle when the incident took place. He was the one who lodged an FIR at the Civil Lines police station.

Shah had launched a drive to popularise cycling following a ban on motorcycles in all residential boys' hostels in the campus. He had announced that he will use a bicycle for commuting within the university campus from August 1.
