Expressing serious concern over communal violence, where a total of 38 people died in various districts of western Uttar Pradesh with 32 deaths in Muzaffarnagar, Awami National Conference has appealed to the people of Muzaffarnagar to maintain peace in the region.

In a statement issued here in Jammu, provincial president, Gian Singh has demanded maintenance of strict watch on mischievous elements besides constituting the judicial commission to probe into the Muzaffarnagar violence, which started on August 27 from the Kawal incident.

He alleged, “These riots not only questions the incompetence and lack of foresight of the government, but also the intentions of the UP government in restoring communal atmosphere to normalcy.”

Despite warning from the home minister to UP government on reports of escalating communal disturbances in the state, CM Akhilesh Yadav has failed to handle the situation, Singh said in the statement.

It added that the first task of politicians expressing views on riot should be to find out how it began by talking to both sides, get the official version, try to get corroborative evidence, and then present a coherent picture. Communal riots are a curse on our society. Not only does it end up in loss of life and property, it divides and polarises the society and gives rise to vicious political debates, Singh said.

The communal riots should be studied and analysed at the time of its occurrence itself, he said adding that analysing such an event after lapse of time makes it more difficult to sift facts from ideologically-motive fiction.

“Since we, unfortunately, have so many communal riots, the sample size is not a problem in such a study and we have enough number of instances of communal riots where such a study can be carried out,” he said.
