AS THE State assembly election is nearing, the Basic Education Department has woken up and decided to take up the cause of Urdu and solve the problems of Arabi/Persian madarsas.

The department was largely responsible for inordinate delay in recruitment of 5000 candidates for Basic Training Certificate (BTC) in teaching Urdu. The department has now asked the madarsa representatives to apply for recognition so that they could be provided with financial assistance.

Addressing a gathering of Madarsa representatives here on Tuesday, Minister for Basic Education Kiran Pal Singh said that the government without interfering in the functioning of madarsa system was ready to provide these institutions with more funds.

The minister said that in order to boost Urdu, the department had made arrangements of 25 lakh books for primary and junior high school students. The minister said that there was no paucity of funds and more books would be made available. The minister said that 6000 Urdu teachers had been selected for BTC training and Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav had announced recruitment of 5000 more teachers. He said Urdu, Arabi and Persian should be connected with the employment. Singh also laid stress on imparting Hindi education with Urdu.

He said that Hindi was necessary.

Secretary to basic education J S Deepak said that the department had been apprised of the problems being faces by madarsas, which would soon be taken care of. Deepak asked the Minorities Welfare Department to take up the issue of non-registered madarsas so that their problems could be solved. Chairman National Distant Schools Education Organisation MC Pant said that those who were unable to join madarsas could join distant education system for religious studies. However, the madarsa representatives said that there was talk about promotion of Urdu but the degree in the language was not approved for government job. They said that without recognition of Urdu in government services entire exercise would prove futile.
