The joys of statehood have so far failed to reflect in the results of the third and final phase of panchayat polls in Andhra Pradesh held on Wednesday.
A day after the UPA decision to create a separate state, Telangana rejoiced, but only the local issues dominated this phase. And unlike the first two, the results of the third phase did not reflect even a marginal edge for the Congress.
Till 9 pm, the Congress and the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) were practically neck and neck, bagging 1,894 and 1,868 panchayats. The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) came third with 1,210 panchayats and Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) bagged only 590.
In Telangana, the TRS gained over the TDP, coming second to the Congress, which got the top slot in the region in the first two phases of the elections as well.
Of the 21 districts which went to polls in the present phase, the Congress was dominating in seven and the TDP in eight. The TRS and the YSRCP were leading in three districts each.
