Some followers of professed Gandhian Anna Hazare have failed the non-violence test. They beat some Congress supporters black and blue when they dared to boo Team Anna member Arvind Kejriwal while he was delivering a speech in Nagpur on Sunday.
In October, when a man hurled a shoe at Kejriwal and some vandals thrashed his colleague Prashant Bhusan in his chamber outside the Supreme Court, Hazare’s India Against Corruption (IAC) NGO had staunchly condemned violence.
But on Sunday noon, the shoe was on the other foot.
The drama took place at Deshpande hall, where activists of Ghantanad — a social organisation supporting the Congress booed Kejriwal when he made some anti-Congress remarks during his speech and called him an agent of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.
When his speech was over, IAC activists thrashed the Ghantanad members in the presence of policemen. Six persons were injured and one, Ishan Sanganwar, was admitted to a private nursing home.
The police later detained around 15 activists of Ghantanad, including their leader, Saurav Narayan Shelke, 22. Shelke, the son of Baba Shelke, a former corporator and a former supporter of Anna Hazare, said, “The police were mute spectators.”
Inviting the protesters for a dialogue, Kejriwal later said, “We are not against any party. If any party opposes the jan lokpal bill, we will oppose them.”
