A tiger killed a farm worker in the forests of the Khadsangi Forest Development Corporation of Maharashtra (FDCM) range in the district on Sunday morning.
Reports say the deceased, Bhaurao Masram (50), a farm labourer from Jhari village in Chimur tehsil had gone to collect Mahua flowers in the jungle with his companions.
The tiger attacked Masram at about 7.30 am in compartment No.54 under Khadsangi of FDCM.
His companions raised an alarm on witnessing the tiger attacking Masram and the beast was forced to leave, but not before killing him on the spot.
Later, the Forest officials were informed of the incident, who reached the spot and moved the body for postmortem to Chimur Rural Hospital, after conducting necessary panchnama.
P.P. Ghate, ACF, FDCM, West Chanda Circle confirmed the incident and said that Masram was killed by a tiger as its pug-marks were found on the incident spot. He added that the area is buffer zone of Tadoba — Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR).
An ex-gratia payment of Rs 5,000 was paid to the kin of the deceased for performing last rites and the regular compensation will follow after completion of departmental formalities, the forest officials said. This is the second case of a human killed by a tiger in the area within a span of a couple of days.
Raghuram Gomaji Shrirame (52) was killed by a tiger on April 1, in compartment No 24 under Murpar (Minjhari) beat of the forests in Chimur tehsil.
