TRAGEDY STRUCK the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) here again today.

A first year MCA student committed suicide inside the hostel this evening. The student Santosh Kumar of Jhansi hanged himself from the ceiling fan in his room (no.105) at D Block Raman Hostel.

This is the second such incident at the IET hostel in the last four months and fourth suicide case in four years.

Institute authorities said the death had nothing to do with ragging. Director, LS Yadav, said: “There is nothing much that we can do if anybody decides to take such an extreme step. Since he returned to the hostel on Sunday he complained to some of his friends of having a headache.”

Cops of Madiaon police station said circumstantial evidences indicated it was a suicide but they were still probing the matter as no suicide note was found. The incident took place at around 5:30 pm when Santosh’s room partner Anand Gupta (MCA I yr) left him alone and went to the market to get milk for him.

When Anand returned, he found the room locked from inside. He knocked for sometime but Santosh did not respond. Then he went to the back portion of the room and peeped through the window. He found Santosh hanging by a rope from the ceiling fan. Anand screamed seeing the horrifying scene and drew the attention of other inmates. They immediately informed the hostel warden who subsequently called the police.

Though no suicide note was recovered from the room, a cut mark was found on his wrist that indicated that maybe he first tried to slash his wrist.

The classes for MCA first year batch started from the third week of August and after attending classes for a few weeks, Santosh left for home. He returned on Sunday. When Dean, Student Welfare A Singh was asked whether ragging by senior students had prompted Santosh to take the extreme step, he immediately dismissed the theory.

The institute authorities said they had special teams that kept vigil on hostels to curb ragging. Santosh’s room partner Anand said: “Santosh was a jolly guy.

Though our friendship is just a month old, I can say that he was quite light-hearted. I’m myself shocked.”

Strangely, when mediapersons rushed to the institute, the teachers did not allow them to speak to students. However, later they allowed to speak to them.
On June 10 this year Puneet Kr Sachan, a B-Tech final year student committed suicide in the same hostel whereas in 2002 two B-Tech first year students took the extreme step. Then too the incidents took place within a span of a few months.
