An anti-dam organization from Arunachal Pradesh has appealed the Centre to scrap all memorandum of agreements (MoAs) inked between state government and various power developers for executing power projects in Upper Subansiri district.
Subansiri Upper Basin Project Grievances and Redressal Committee (SUBPGRC) in a memorandum to Union Forest and Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh recently demanded the cancellation of all the MoAs and go for fresh agreements with due consideration of all the safety norms in implementation of dam projects.
In a statement today, the committee suspected vested motives and foul play in the MoA signing spree adopted by the state government in the recent past.
It said that had the government thought for welfare of the state and its people, it would have done better by going ahead with one or two projects in each river basin of the state on experimental basis and then later on gone ahead with more projects in phased manner.
It smacked of foul play by people at the helm of affairs given the spree with which agreements were reached and understandings were signed without proper consultation.
On the argument, the committee demanded that an investigation be launched into the ‘signing-spree’ by the CBI or the Enforcement Directorate as it mattered life and security of the people in project areas.
