The police were called in to control a group of agitated passport applicants who created pandemonium at the Passport Seva Kendra in Udyog Vihar on Friday.
They were enraged over long delays in the processing of applications, discrepancies in the online application forms and list of documents sought and poor facilities at the Kendra.
Besides, the applicants were also angry that they had to wait for hours together to submit their forms. The Kendra does not even have drinking water facility.
The contract for the Kendra has been outsourced to Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).
A similar situation had arisen on Thursday. Though the applicants were given specific time to submit their forms, they have to wait “endlessly”.
According to them, there has been no effort to bring down the waiting time. Normally, in the absence of a public address system, the staff call out the names of applicants. Many a time it is lost in the din and the applicant misses his/her turn to submit the forms. “I was given a slot for processing of my application on Thursday itself but this is the second day in a row that I am standing in the queue,” said Madhu Nanda, 45.
The chief passport officer, ministry of external affairs, Mukesh Kumar Pardesi assured that the grievances would be taken up with TCS.
“I have made a note of all issues. If there are problems with the process, we need to streamline it,” he said.
Pardesi, however, pointed out that the delay over the counters could be attributed to incomplete applications. “We have to be very careful before handing out passports and verification of the documents may take time,” he added.
