A senior army officer was killed in a gunfight with militants in Jammu and Kashmir, officials said on Wednesday.
Colonel Neeraj Sood, Commanding Officer of 18 Rashtriya Rifles, was critically injured on Tuesday night when he went to take stock of the situation during a gunfight with militants in the forests of Saiwan village in Kupwara district, around 100 km from Srinagar.
The 40-year-old colonel was rushed to a hospital in Kupwara where he succumbed to his injuries, making him the highest-ranking officer to be killed in Kashmir this year, officials said.
“He was injured around 10.15 p.m. and was evacuated but could not survive,” said an army official on the condition of anonymity.
Kupwara Superintendent of Police Uttam Chand said the militants shot the colonel in the head. A resident of New Delhi, Sood is survived by his wife and an 11-year-old daughter.
The encounter in Kupwara was still on when last reports came in. Additional forces have been rushed to the area.
