AN ARMYMAN on sentry duty was found dead under mysterious circumstances in Cantonment area early on Saturday morning. Police and army officials ruled out foul play or possibility of the man committing suicide. They claimed that the man died after the self-loading rifle (SLR) he was carrying went off accidentally.

It was around 5.45 am when army men deputed at Central Command signal receiving station at Arjunganj heard a gunshot. They rushed towards the place to find Nayak Ashok Kumar (48) lying in a pool of blood at his duty point with a bullet injury evident on his neck. His SLR was lying close to him.

Senior army officials were informed and Ashok was rushed to the Command Hospital. He was declared brought dead. The police were informed later.

Ashok Kumar, a native of Doda, Jammu & Kashmir, was serving with the Defence Security Corps (DSC) after his early retirement from army a few years back.

Investigating officer (IO) in the case revealed primary investigation and circumstantial evidences indicated that Ashok Kumar died after the rifle went off accidentally. The SLR was kept on single-shot mode and bullet was fired accidentally causing his death.

The IO further ruled out possibility of Ashok taking the extreme step of ending his life as he was facing no trouble in his service or family life. The body was being sent to his native place on Sunday.
