Army officer, three militants killed in Manipur

An army officer and three militants were killed and six others injured in separate incidents in Manipur, Assam Rifles and the police said on Thursday.

An army officer and three militants were killed and six others injured in separate incidents in Manipur, Assam Rifles and the police said on Thursday.

Armymen belonging to the 12th Maratha Light Infantry, led by Lt Satbir Singh, were attacked by unidentified militants last night in Oinam area in Bishenpur district, the police said.

The army personnel returned the fire and in the ensuing encounter Singh was killed, and a jawan identified as Chandrakanta injured, the sources said.

Minutes before the encounter, the militants exploded two grenades and fired at the house of a Manipur government official, Ibopishak Singh, from whom they had demanded money.

In a separate incident, Assam Rifles (AR) personnel during an operation yesterday at Maringthel village at the Manipur-Myanmar border in Chandel district apprehended a group of militants armed with automatic weapons, an AR release said.

In the resulting encounter, three militants were killed, the release said.

In another incident late last night, unidentified militants exploded a powerful grenade at a private clinic at Uripok area in Imphal West district injuring five persons, the police said.
