The Army is preparing to send an expedition to Antarctica, which will be the 26th Indian Antarctic expedition.
The team comprising one officer, four junior commissioned officers and five other ranks met army chief to General JJ Sngh on Friday.
Led by Lieutenant Colonel Suresh Kumar, it is scheduled to leave Mumbai for Cape Town November 7. The team will leave South Africa for Antarctica on November 10.
Since 1982, the Army has been playing a lead role in the conduct of Antarctic expeditions and it’s now involved in construction of permanent stations, repair, maintenance and extension of stations, running of all life support systems in the station and overland transportation of men and material in Antarctica.
