The army on Saturday said it had rescued 73 civilians — including a critically-ill heart patient, women, and children — stranded on Tangdhar-Nasta Chhun road in frontier district of Kupwara after an avalanche hit the region on Friday.

“A rescue team of the local Rashtriya Rifle unit rescued the trapped people and provided them medical aid,” said an army spokesperson in a statement issued to the press on Saturday.

“Army detachment based at Nasta Chhun received information about stranded vehicles full of passengers, including women, children, aged persons, and an ambulance with critically ill heart patient approximately 1.5km away from Nasla Chhun Pass. The army’s avalanche rescue team of Nasta Chhun Pass was sprung into action immediately despite harsh weather conditions and snow blizzard,” the statement added.
