After an action-packed hour's play at the DLTA Courts on Monday, unseeded Ashutosh Singh shocked second seed Gabriel Moraru of Romania into submission by beating him 7-6 (7/2), 6-3. The 24-year-old Singh looked confident and hit the ball hard to enter the second round convincingly.
Moraru fought hard in the first set but Ashutosh's scintillating serves and returns overpowered the Romanian, who lost the first set 2-7 in a tiebreak.
Moraru, who had made it to the semifinals in Kolkata last week, never really looked like making a comeback, although he gave it all in the second set, but to no avail.
Moraru staged a minor fightback and even saved five of Ashutosh's match points. But Ashustosh did not succumb to Moraru's brief fightback and a brilliant crosscourt winner assured him a place in the second round.
In the other match of the day, top-seed Alexey Kedriouk of Kazakhstan outclassed unseeded Purav Raja 6-3, 6-2.
The match, which lasted just over an hour was dominated by the 25-year old Kazakh who never allowed a rusty-looking Raja to stage a comeback.
