A high-level team of the Assam government will today visit disputed Lagpih village on Assam-Meghalaya border where two persons were killed in police firing following clash between two communities, official sources said here.

A high-level team of the Assam government will today visit disputed Lagpih village on Assam-Meghalaya border where two persons were killed in police firing following clash between two communities, official sources said here.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, currently in the USA, has directed Health and Revenue Ministers Himanta Biswa Sarma and Bhumidhar Barman, Chief Secretary N K Das, Principal Secretary (Home) S C Das and Director General of Police Sankar Barua to make an on the spot assesssment, the sources said.

The situation in the village, where two persons were killed and over 20 injured in an armed clash between two communities ata weekly market and subsequent police firing, is under control with additional police force deployed there, Kamrup(Rural) superintendent of police P S Mahanta said.

Both Assam and Meghalaya stake claim to the village which is on the border of Kamrup and West Khasi Hills districts of the two states respectively.

A joint committee had been earlier formed Sarma and Meghalaya Minister Prestone Tyngsong at its head to resolve the dispute.
