Assistant project manager caught accepting bribe

india Updated: Jul 03, 2006 01:12 IST

AN ASSISTANT project manager, Rajkumar Gupta, working with UP Project Corporation was caught red handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh by the task force of anti-corruption bureau here at Gomtinagar on Sunday.

The bribe was allegedly demanded from a contractor for sanctioning Rs 6 lakh for constructing the roof of a school under construction.

As soon as the news of Gupta’s arrest became public, several employees of his department surrounded the police station. However, the cops have lodged a case under anti-corruption act.

Reports said that Santosh Singh, resident of Bada Birha, Alambagh had on June 30 given an application to the anti-corruption bureau that his firm Bhola Traders had been given a contract by UP Project Corporation for constructing a school in Etah about two years back. Singh alleged that Rs 6 lakh due to the firm were not being cleared and that the assistant project manager had demanded a bribe of Rs 1 lakh to clear the amount.

Assistant superintendent of police (ASP) Shuchi Ghildiyal immediately set up a police team under deputy superintendent of police (DySP) OP Singh to probe the matter.

On Sunday morning, Santosh told the police team investigating the matter that the assistant project manager had called him in UP Land Reclamation Project office at Gomtinagar with the money.

The police team laid a trap and around 12.30 pm, caught Gupta red handed while accepting the bribe.  ASP, Ghildiyal later informed newspersons that Gupta had first demanded Rs 1.5 lakh and later settled for Rs 1 lakh.

Meanwhile, employees of Gupta’s department who surrounded the Gomtinagar police station immediately after hearing of their boss arrest claimed that Gupta has been trapped in a conspiracy.
