Sushma Asthana, wife of the main accused in the Ghaziabad provident fund scam Ashutosh Asthana, has applied for three months parole in court.
Sushma Asthana, also an accused in the case, is lodged in Dasna Jail, Ghaziabad, since February 16, 2008.
Jail Superintendent V.K. Singh said she has cited her health condition as the reason for parole and also for attending the last rites of her husband.
Ashutosh Asthana died in jail last Saturday under mysterious conditions and his body was cremated on Sunday.
He was arrested after the Rs 7 crore scam, in which money was siphoned off from provident fund accounts, was unearthed.
Ashutosh Asthana had allegedly named several judges as beneficiaries of the siphoned-off amount.
Jail officials said Sushma Asthana is a patient of hypertension and not keeping well after her husband’s death.
“She requested me to allow her to go home to perform the last rites and to take care of her three children,” said Singh.
“I have sent an application in this regard to the designated court.”
Her lawyers have also moved a similar application before the Essential Commodities Act Court in Ghaziabad for her release on parole.
“The applications are likely to come up for hearing on Thursday,” said Nitin Verma, her lawyer.
“We have requested for a release on parole as her bail application is pending at the high court for over six months,” he said.
