Who provided logistic support to Sayeed Amir Ali (38), the suspected Pakistani spy, during his stay in the state capital? On whose reference Ali stayed at a hotel after landing in the city?
The UP Anti Terrorist Squad (ATS) has launched a hunt for the modules of the Pakistan intelligence agency – ISI who provided all assistance to Ali from behind the scene. Each month a fixed amount was transferred to his account number- 145246 at Hazratganj branch of Bank of Baroda.
When Ali landed in the city in May, 2005 rather than the local contact his stay in the hotel was arranged by the sleeper module of ISI, who remain elusive. The investigation indicates though Ali got the passport, driving licence, PAN, ration card and opened account in the bank with the assistance of local touts and with those he established intimate relationship yet the ISI network provided him all logistic support.
We are trying to track down the modules who assisted Ali said a police officer and added it would expose the ISI network spread in the country. Special cell of Delhi police has already arrested the touts Arshad and Chand who had helped Ali in getting passport and other documents.
Khalil with whom Ali ran the electrical shop in Gomti Nagar has been located in Mumbai and ATS has picked him for interrogation. The ATS also started interrogation of the owner of the house number 2/22 Vijay Khand where Ali stayed as tenant.
Meanwhile the role of Local Intelligence Unit (LIU) has also come under scanner after it was found that Regional Passport office has sent the document for police verification of 27 applicants including Ali to LIU office. After verification the LIU had submitted its report in the office of regional passport officers and passport was issued to all the applicants.
ADG (Law and Order), Brij Lal on Wednesday said the local intelligence office had received the list of 27 applicants from the passport office for police verification. Yet the DIG Lucknow in his report has stated that Lucknow police had received no requisition from the passport office regarding police verification of Ali. Even the police report on basis of which passport was issued to Ali was not submitted by the police department.
The LIU officials had stated that dispatch No S–649, June 9, 2005 was actually on record in the name of Sunil Saxena of Sundarbagh, Lucknow and not Amir Ali.
On the other hand an officer in the passport office said they have received verification report of Ali from the police department and local intelligence unit. It is for the police department to find out how come a fake report was submitted by their office. “We have already ordered an internal inquiry on the matter”, he said.
The ADG (ATS) AK Jain said the DIG (ATS) Rajeev Sabharwal has been directed to investigate into the matter and submit report. During investigation he would focus on all the issues related with regional passport office, Lucknow police and local intelligence unit”, he said.
