Acclaimed naturalist Sir David Attenborough has been named Britain's greatest living icon after coming ahead of Sir Paul McCartney and singer Morrissey in a nationwide poll conducted by BBC2's culture show.
The top three nominees were Attenborough, McCartney and Morrissey. Attenborough has been with the BBC for more than 50 years and was even the controller of BBC2. He was knighted in 1985, reports Contactmusic.com.
Speaking for him to win, wildlife broadcaster Bill Oddie said: "David has affected the lives of people and wildlife for many years. With his amazing amount of knowledge, his achievement is to recommend life, wildlife and human life to the people of this earth."
