According to the 'Vision Plan: 2006-11' prepared by the specially constituted Academic Committee, the varsity—which did allow students to pursue dual degree programmes in the past— is planning to revive such courses soon.

AU is also considering introducing five-year programmes combining BSc and BTech courses or a three-year programme combining MSc and MTech courses.

The proposal is to give students the freedom to disassociate themselves from the programme after the first degree if they so prefer.

Similarly, starting Honours courses in certain selected subjects and extending it gradually, depending upon the demand, to other subjects is also being looked into.

The five-year Plan reveals that that the varsity is also actively considering instituting integrated five-year curricula culminating in the post-graduate degrees in the Arts and Science faculties even as the Law faculty is already on the verge of starting the 5-year-integrated LLB programme.

Some other new enterprises and innovations that the varsity plans to introduce in the coming five years include undertaking massive reforms in its examination system.

Unhappy with its existing examination pattern and convinced that it makes classroom teaching irrelevant and prompts students to skip classes, the varsity is now proposing to introduce an examination pattern in which classroom discussions, term papers, and written examinations will have equal weightage.

The plan also includes steps to place the Examination Cell under a full-fledged Academic Administrator and doing away with the existing system of appointing university teachers to administer the cell.

To make admission process better, AU plans to establish a separate Admission Cell with an Academic Administrator as its Director/ Controller. This cell, it is proposed, will have its own support staff and will take care of UG and PG admissions. This will also enable the University teaching Departments to shed the onerous and undesirable burden of conducting the admissions of PG students.

Another new step that can also be taken is setting up of a separate academic Website in addition to the existing administrative Website to provide information regarding the courses offered by the university and the research and other achievements of students and faculty members.

Introduction of a computer awareness course for both the UG and PG students of the university is also on the cards.

The Computer Science Department of the university is said to be willing to make available the necessary wherewithal for introducing the course.

It is also proposed to bring in an English Language course for UG students with a view to augment their communication skills.

If all goes as per the plans, the university will soon also have a full-fledged Campus Placement Cell in place of the existing University Employment Bureau to help students bag jobs after they graduate.

The cell, it is proposed would work out a placement system for the students willing to take up the job of tutoring the young ones too.

Besides introducing the compulsory attendance, AU is also considering enhancing the role of information and communication technology in class rooms, introducing computer literary and communication ability programmes with the help of its Computer Science Department besides striving to develop a new campus with proper infrastructural facilities during the coming five years.
