Autorickshaw drivers, who are known for misbehaving with commuters and over-charging them, are all set for an image makeover.

The Samast Haryana Autorickshaw Union, in a meeting on Friday, decided to implement 11 steps to improve the reputation of drivers. These include 50% discount in fare for the physically challenged and widows of martyrs and special seating arrangement for senior citizens.

“Autorickshaw drivers are famous for using abusive language with commuters,” said Vasudev Aheriya, president of the union.

"We have unanimously agreed to start an image-building exercise," he added. http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/HTEditImages/Images/05-02-12-metro5.jpg

“A meeting of autorickshaw drivers, operating in different parts of Faridabad, was convened on Friday to devise a strategy in this regard,” he said.

“We have decided to implement 11 steps like 50% discount in fare for the physically challenged and widows of martyrs, taking accident victims to hospitals, etc,” he added.

The drivers will also deposit the items forgotten by commuters in the vehicle at a police station against a proper receipt, informing the police if some driver participates in a crime and restricting drunk driving.

“We have also decided to contribute at least Rs 21 for the marriage of poor girls and spread the message of following a two-child norm by drivers, among the other guidelines set-up by us,” Aheriya said.

Around 20,000 autorickshaws ply in Faridabad. Two years ago, a large number of drivers were taken to task near the Mini Secretariat in Sector 12 against drunk driving.
