india Updated: Jun 19, 2009 12:01 IST

Azim Premji, Chairman of Wipro Ltd, was awarded the US-India Business Council's (USIBC) 34th Anniversary 'Global Vision' award in Washington for his contribution in promoting India-US relations through commercial partnership.

The award was presented by retired president and CEO of GE India Scott Bayman, USIBC President Ron Somers and PepsiCo Chairman and CEO Indra K Nooyi on behalf of USIBC on June 17.

"Despite all his success and recognition, he is the same person I met in 1993 -- humble, passionate and committed to quality -- a very, very good guy," Bayman said about Premji.

USIBC, according to a Wipro statement, would make a donation to Operation Smile, a children's charity treating facial deformities, in the name of the awardee Premji.

The donation would allow 14 children receive life-changing surgery during Operation Smile's August 2009 medical mission to Gujarat.
