In what could spell more trouble for senior BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani, a senior IPS officer, Anju Gupta, on Friday deposed before the special CBI court saying the speech he made at Ayodhya shortly before the Babri Masjid was demolished on December 6, 1992, was inflammatory. Profile in courage

She added Advani and other BJP leaders present at the site were initially jubilant when the mosque came down and celebrated its fall.

Gupta was Assistant Superin-tendent of Police (Ayodhya) during the demolition period. She was also assigned as Advani personal security officer when he visited Ayodhya on that occasion, and thus closely followed his movements.

Gupta deposed before the CBI court in Rae Bareli still conducting hearings of the case. She was a prosecution witness in the case in which Advani and other BJP leaders, have been accused of inciting violence.

Taking her oath in court in the name of Lord Rama, she described in detail her interaction with Advani during that period and the different spots in Ayodhya to which she accompanied him. “Advani repeatedly said in his speech that the Rama temple would be constructed at the same site where the mosque stood,” she said.

“ When the disputed structure was falling -the domes were coming down - the leaders present on the dais were joyous. They were hugging each other and distributing sweets. It was celebration time,” she recalled.
