Arriving by a special IAF flight former President APJ Abdul Kalam, who was received by Anna University Vice Chancellor D Viswanathan, happily stepped into the refurbished quarters of the guest house of Anna University, with just two suitcases. His personal book collection will follow later.
The only concession sought by the former President was the same cook who used to make his preferred vegetarian food for him five years ago. On Wednesday the former President’s menu consisted of four phulkas, some bitter gourd kootu and a glass of buttermilk.
On Thursday his duties as visiting professor will commence when he would meet with the University's faculty, then chat up with PG students in the afternoon before addressing a massive gathering of Anna University students in the sports complex.
"We had originally planned a rousing welcome but President Kalam (that's how he may be called forever) very typically wanted it to be low key," Viswanthan said. Kalam insisted that his duties would be purely honorary and he'll not receive any salary the V-C disclosed.
