If being wise means following the well-trodden path, Santacruz’s newest drinking hole has hit the bull’s eye. At Three Wise Men (TWM) there’s nothing you haven’t seen before. Brick walls, a London bar theme, a classics playlist that even Toto’s Garage has outgrown and a flat-screen TV to keep the IPL fans coming — all the right ingredients for your friendly-neighbourhood bar.
As we frantically looked for any signs of ingenuity left and right, and then up and down, the only thing to catch our attention were the tacky modern art paintings framed and scattered on the ceiling. The fact that this resto-bar is located in a housing society, next to a wine shop and bang opposite a police station, also adds an element of curiosity.
Like its name, taken after the popular whiskey shot, TWM sticks to the tried-and-tested formula. The bar menu lacks imagination, instead offering a host of garden-variety cocktails. We tried the Mai Tai (Rs 350), where the white and dark rum were lost in the flavours of apricot and orange juice. The Whisky Sour (Rs 350) was potent and refreshing, all at once. The Secret Recipe Sangria (Rs 395) hardly threw us any surprise. Our advice: stick to the beer (Rs 165) and Rum and Coke (Rs 110).
The food menu is limited to snacks, and is not exhaustive. The mishmash of cuisines — every thing from Mexican to Japanese — had our guards up. However, we were pleasantly surprised with the Monterey Jack Cheese Quesadillas, whose flavoursome fresh tortillas went down well with the guacamole (R190). The Spicy Calamari Rings (R290) were crispy and drink-friendly too. All said, the wisest move for this no-frills bar is its pocket-friendly pricing that is sure to keep the suburban boozers coming.
