Three forensic tests conducted on the five persons arrested in the alleged rape and murder in May of two Dalit minor girls in Badaun have found their claims of ‘innocence’ to be ‘truthful’ and detected no ‘deviation’.

The tests were recently conducted on the five accused by the CBI at the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL).

“The five have pleaded their innocence and the three tests show that their responses were truthful,” concluded the CFSL report, while referring to the five accused — Pappu Yadav and his brothers Awadhesh and Urvesh, and Uttar Pradesh policemen Chhatrapal Yadav and Sarvesh Yadav. CBI has submitted the findings in its probe status report given to the Allahabad high court.

The tests included a “lie-detector test, forensic psychological assessment test and forensic statement analysis test,” said a CBI source.

The findings could prod the agency to re-focus on “others”, including the victims’ relatives who were put through polygraph tests at the CFSL by the CBI to verify their versions, said the source.

The victims were found missing the night of May 27 and their bodies were found hanging from a tree the next morning. The five were arrested by the local police then and the CBI took over the case on June 12.

The forensic tests’ findings, however, have only corroborative evidentiary value in any court of law and the CBI says it is not drawing any conclusions from it yet though they have been made part of the case records, said the source.
