The Uttar Pradesh police are yet to unravel the mystery behind the 'audacious' hanging of two minor girls 500 metres from their house after they were gang raped on the intervening night of May 27 and 28 in Katra Sadatganj village of this district.

"Their bodies could have been disposed of in river Ganga that flows nearby or the jungle close by," a district police official said requesting anonymity.

Besides being close to the house to victims, the mango tree from which the two girls were hanged is visible from the house of main accused Pappu Yadav and his brothers Avadhesh and Urvesh.

"Maybe they wanted to show it as suicide but it was too close to their houses and that too when the family members of the girls were looking for them all around the village," added the official.

The police suspect the involvement of more than 12 persons in the act of hanging. But so far they have arrested five persons — the three Yadav brothers and two associate policemen — Sarvesh Yadav and Chatrapal Singh.

Two more accused are yet to be identified.

"A vehicle may also have been used to hang the girls from branches that are more than 10 feet high. We are also probing the locations of mobile phones of the key accused to match it with the timing and sequence of events on the fateful night," the police official said.

He added that one of the victims might have known Pappu but her family vehemently denied this.

Meanwhile, Badaun's SSP Atul Saxena said "Our probe is looking into all these questions and it is based on what the family of victims have told us. We have taken DNA samples from the bodies of the girls and sent them to Hyderabad to get a clear picture."
